Trexler Park – Long Exposures

This past weekend I had it in my head that I wanted to accomplish some long exposures in an area by a beautiful foot bridge in Trexler Park, Allentown, PA. Having been there the week before, I had a pre-conceived plan of how I wanted to approach the composition. The only thing I needed was the cooperation of Mother Nature. She was a bit finicky at the start. But in the end, she came through for me. Note: All of the following images utilized a 10 stop neutral density filter and were taken with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 MkII paired with the M.Zuiko ED 7-14mm f2.8 PRO.

ISO 64, 10mm, f/16, 60.0 secs.

This next image was taken using Olympus’ “Live Composite” mode. By using this approach, I am able to create a more painterly effect in the sky. This is accomplished by setting the camera to expose every 2 seconds. The total time on this image was 3 minutes.

This final image is a shot of an old hunting cabin adjacent to the the foot bridge.

Lehigh Gorge State Park (2 of 2)

As a follow up to the previous post I did, I went back to the Gorge 2 weeks later. It was amazing to see the change with the temperatures dropped. I was also experimenting with Olympus’s new 12-100 f4.0 PRO lens. With this camera & lens combination you achieve up to 6.5 shutter speed steps of compensation. The long exposure shots in this post are 2 seconds long and handheld. I continue to be impressed with the image stabilization technology.

Lehigh Gorge State Park (1 of 2)

A short while ago I decided I wanted to do some winter hiking in the Lehigh Gorge State park. It is located just outside of Weatherly, PA and encompasses two counties, Luzern & Carbon. The park follows the Lehigh River and includes some beautiful waterfalls & ice formations. I spent a fair amount of time around Buttermilk Falls. I brought my Olympus OM-D E-M1 MkII with me. I wanted to see how I could do with hand held long exposures. The second image in this series was hand held for almost one full second. I have some other shots that went almost 3 seconds. I continue to be amazed at the internal image stabilization of this camera.

Tank Hollow (foggy) Trail

This past weekend I went to a new hiking location called Tank Hollow. For those of you living in the NE, you may recall this entire part of the country was covered in heavy fog most of the weekend. I thought it would be a good opportunity to try out my trusty water resistant Olympus OM-D E-M1 MkII. I got soaked, the camera got soaked and we both lived to tell about it.

Manhattan from Brooklyn

A few weeks ago I traveled to New York with my friend and fellow Olympus Trailblazer Alex McClure. Our plan was to photograph the city from Brooklyn. We had done this back in November from the area around the bridges, however, we ran out of time to get shots from the this location (in front of the piers). This time, when we arrived at this location, we were greeted with a beautiful evening and a wonderful sky. I had two camera bodies with me and I used both of them for the following images (The Olympus OM-D E-M5 MarkII and the PEN-F). After we photographed the city skyline we walked up to and over the Brooklyn Bridge. The remainder of the images were from the bridge. The one with the car headlights and taillights was done in “Live Composite” mode.

Bogert’s Covered Bridge 175th Anniversary

On Sunday, June 12, 2016 Bogert’s Covered Bridge celebrated its 175 Anniversary. Bogert’s is located in the Lehigh Parkway which is part of the Allentown, PA city parks. This is a location I enjoy shooting. There were many groups present for the celebration. I especially enjoyed the reenactors. I was fortunate to have met Gen. U.S. Grant (aka Ken Serfass), President Abraham Lincoln (aka Rich Neely) and Fife player (aka Chris Zimmerman). These three gentlemen were a pleasure to photograph. All images were shot with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II with the 12-40mm f2.8 Pro or the 7-14mm f2.8 Pro lens.

Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve

A few weeks ago I traveled with my friend and fellow photog, Dave Rehrig to the Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve. It has been several years since my last visit to this beautiful Delaware Valley, Pennsylvania area. I had forgotten how beautiful this place is. They boast the fact that they have nearly 800 varieties of natural species (there are approximately 2000 species native to PA). More than 80 of which are rare, threatened or endangered native plants designated as Plants of Special Concern in Pennsylvania. Here is a link to Bowman’s Hill Website. All images were shot with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 MkII. The macro shots were taken with the M.Zuiko ED 60mm f2.8. The rest were taken with the M.Zuiko ED 12-40mm f2.8 PRO or the M.Zuiko ED 7-14mm f2.8 PRO. The last image of the flower is a series of 20 focus bracketed shots (which you can set to automatically shoot within the E-M5 Mk II) that provided me with a greater depth of field and thereby allowing me to have the front to the rear of the flower in full focus.

Spring at Jacobsburg State Park

A few weeks ago, I made my second trek up to the Jacobsburg State Park. It is a beautiful park with well maintained trails. I had my Olympus OM-D E-M5 MkII in hand and it was paired with one of my very favorite lenses, the 7-14mm f2.8 PRO. This image was taken just before all of the spring foliage came alive. I shot this hand held at 1/20th of a second (thanks Olympus for the 5 axis image stabilization), ISO 400 at f/5.6.

Hidden Gems of New Hope

This past weekend I was in New Hope, PA. In the early days of our country, this was a mid-point between New York & Philly and of course, George Washington was supposed to have lodged here. Today, it is a vibrant eclectic arts community. There are visual treasures at every turn. However, you need to keep an open eye to catch many of them.
