Simon Mulligan: Love Songs

A couple of weeks ago, Valentine’s Day to be exact, I photographed Simon Mulligan and company at the Jazz Cabaret upstairs at the Miller Symphony Hall. The company part consisted of Steven Liu, the Director El Sistema Youth Music Education Program and my very good friend, David Willard on drums. The trio created an evening of absolutely amazing music. You could hear and feel the passion of classically trained pianist, Simon Mulligan. I am already looking forward to his next performance.

Expansions: The Dave Liebman Group

A few weeks back I was again privileged to be the photographer for the Jazz Cabaret at Miller Symphony.  The group we enjoyed was led by Dave Liebman and was called Expansions – The Dave Liebman Group.  Liebman is a renowned jazz musician and has played with many of the masters including Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea and others and having been recorded in over 300 pieces. Liebman has also authored books and instructional DVDs which are acknowledged as classics in the jazz field.  Liebman has begun to introduce new younger generation musicians to his band, hence the name “The Expansions”.  These newcomers are being inspired and taught by Liebman.  The music we enjoyed ranged from classical, free and traditional jazz.

For The Love Of It

A couple of weeks ago I was greeted with a surprise when I went to get the mail. My December issue of Outdoor Photographer was in the stack. As usual, I thumbed through the magazine and noticed a couple of images that looked familiar. They were mine. It was an article about me and my photography. Take a look. Also, here is a direct link to the article (click here).

Pennhurst State School and Hospital (1 of 2)

In keeping with the Halloween theme for this time of the year, I thought now would be a good time to post this. During the summer, I had the opportunity to visit Pennhurst State School & Hospital, originally known as the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic positioned on the border between Chester County and Montgomery County in Pennsylvania. In 1903, the Pennsylvania Legislature authorized the creation of the institution and a commission was organized to take into consideration the number and status of the feeble-minded and epileptic persons in the state and determine a placement for construction to care for these residents. From 1903 to 1908 the first buildings were constructed. On November 23, 1908, “Patient number 1” was admitted to the hospital. Within four years of operation, Pennhurst was already overcrowded. I can only imagine what it must have been like to arrive at this place. I was able to gain access through the efforts of Denise Ippolito, a very talented photographer. Here is a link to her website.

This blog will consist of two posts. The first one is of the general campus and the next one will be the Administrative building.

Saucon Valley Barn Tour

Last month I attended the annual Saucon Valley Barn tour. This is the same organization I did the workshop with in spring. We had fabulous weather and a wonderful time. It is amazing to see some of the eclectic furnishings in some of the converted barns. The one home had huge sampling of Chinese art work (I wasn’t expecting to see that in a converted barn). The same home had a glass piece imbedded into the floor. It caught my eye and I included two images of the piece. When you look at the two images they are one in the same. One shot was taken from the first floor looking down towards the basement and the other taken from the basement looking up. I later learned the glass piece was used in sailing ships in the 1800’s to create light in the ship’s hull.

The 3 Jakes

On September 21st, I saw a friend/business associate perform at Bethlehem’s Godfrey Daniels. His name is Jim Gentile and his group is called The 3 Jakes. They are an eclectic folk rock band and this was there first appearance since 2003. The 3 Jakes last appearance in the U.S. was in 2000, when they opened for Little Feat at Allentown’s Crocodile Rock Café. As you can see they had the place rocking.

VIA Marathon

I was asked to photograph The Lehigh Valley Health Network VIA Marathon two weeks ago. It was an amazing experience, even though it required a 5:00 in morning start. Here are a few images from the day.
